根据地下水的变化规律，预测未来某时某地地下水水情。按预报的内容分水位预报、水量预报和水质预报等。按预见期分为短期预报、中长期预报和长期预报。长期预报的预见期在1年以上,目的是了解地下水的长期变化趋势，为国土开发、区域性经济规划和环境保护提供依据。中长期预报的预见期为1个月到1年。短期预报的预见期为 1个月以内，要求报出最高、最低水位（或水量等）出现和持续的时间，为地下水的合理开发或排水防渍等提供依据。地下水预报的基本方法是利用过去的资料，推测未来的变化。因此地下水水情的长期观测是地下水预报的基本工作。地下水的补给来源主要是降水和地表水，因此降水的历史记载、与地下水的补给有关的地表水的水文资料，是地下水预报的重要依据。此外，与地下水排泄有关的数据，如泉水流量、土壤蒸发量、潜水蒸发量、枯水期的河流流量和人工开采量也是预报的依据，也须观测记录。根据所取得的资料，建立地下水数学模型进行地下水水位、水量等预报。
地下水水质预报多用于预报地下水的污染。除上述有关资料外，还必须有不同时间的水质分析数据和有关参数，建立水质数学模型进行预报。
