元素替代或掺杂效应，例如对氧化物超导体的某种化学元素为其他某种元素部分替代或由另外元素来替代后对超导电性的影响程度称元素替代效应。由于氧化物超导体的CuO2平面载流子层对产生高温超导电性起有主要作用，所以元素替代或掺杂效应一般地有三种情况：⑴发生在非CuO2面的元素替代对CuO2面的性质基本无影响或无影响；⑵发生在非CuO2面的元素替代对CuO2面性质产生影响；⑶发生在CuO2面上的元素替代对超导电性质的影响程度。例如对Y系氧化物超导体YBa2Cu3O7，若用La或Nd或Sm等替代Y元素，它们对CuO2平面载流层性质均可说无影响，它们的Tc≈90K均一样，这是属于上述⑴的情形。对镧系氧化物超导体(La1-xBax)2CuO4，这里x=0.08时对应的Tc=30K。但若用Sr或Ca替代Ba元素（x仍是0.08），CuO2平面载流层的性质就有变化，此时Tc分别对应为20K和40K，这是上述⑵的情形。上述第⑶种情形，例如对镧系的La1.85Sr0.15Cu1-xNixO4±y，这里用Ni部分地替代Cu。实验显示，少量的掺杂Ni即可引起Tc的急剧下降，且随着x的逐渐增加，其导电行为从金属性质变为半导体性质。
