体重205-398克，体长300-398毫米。眼周有黑褐闪绿的宽带斑。头和颈大部为深栗色;后颈下部、上背、肩与两肋为黑白相间的虫状细斑，下背与腰暗褐色 翅上翼镜呈金属绿色胸部棕白并满布黑斑;腹部白色。雌鸟头与后颈棕褐色。
见于我国境内的湖泊、沼泽及江河。杂食性，夏季主要吃动物性食物，冬天吃植物和种子，但在繁殖季节动物性食物明显增多，包括小型软体动物、蜻蜒、摇蚊幼虫及吸血纹幼虫和水生甲虫等。繁殖在4-6月间，一窝产8-12枚卵。初生幼雏重21-31克。以往捕杀供食用并利用鸭绒和鸭羽，现应大力保护。可驯养展览。
