又称芥酸，系统命名为顺式－13－二十二(碳)烯酸。从油菜种子制得的菜油或芥子油中，以及若干其他十字花科植物的种子中皆有较高的含量。在菜油中含量约占总脂肪酸组成的47.8％。某些海生动物脂肪如鳕肝油中也含有它。
油菜酸熔点33～34°C,沸点265°C(15毫米汞柱)，相对密度0.860(55/4°C)。与硝酸作用,则异构化成其反式异构体。反式油菜酸称为菘酸，熔点60°C，沸点 256°C（10毫米汞柱）。油菜酸氧化则制得正壬酸和十一碳二酸。油菜酸的纯品，可以从菜油中分离制得。
