东西岩风景区为南明山——东西岩省级风景名胜区的一个相对独立的景区，位于丽水市西北28公里处的曳岭区所属崇义、丽新二乡交界处,面积9.18平方公里。地理坐标：东经119°45′，北纬28°30′3″。东起虎迹溪，西至流坑水库，南起黄弄村，北至老鼠山北山脚，并包括老竹镇的黄兰、道弄源两个畲族自然村。景区各个景点全部由沉积岩自然形成，属典型的丹霞地貌。
东西岩原属宣平县，历来是风景名山，明朝进士何镗曾评论说：“青田石门最胜，缙云仙都最奇，而穹隆崛起怪伟环崎，莫过于宣邑东西岩。”早在唐朝就有东西岩十景，它们是：玉甑岩、水帘洞、桃花洞、将军岩、试剑岩、穿身洞、卓笔峰、牛鼻洞、清风峡、幞头岩。有关东西岩的景色描述，在《宣平县志》十二卷中有《东西岩赋》，其中写有“朝步西趋分，又恐数见不鲜，彼三竺两峰吾生长之所稔兮，无鹊仙都今又列吾几穿前。”可见东西岩风景之胜无以比拟。
东西岩风景区以石奇水秀，山静林幽和畲族风情为特色，随着日后的进一步开发，将逐步建设成为风景文化游赏兼野营度假的综合旅游区。
