Like many pheasant species,Tragopan show sexual dimorphism with the males having colorful plumage and a wide range of ornamentation, but they are similar to partridges in other traits such as molt patterns tail (from center to outside) and the short tail relative to the wings.
角雉属Tragopan两性羽色不同,雄性具有艳丽的装饰性羽毛,这与一般雉族Phasianini相似;而尾较翅为短,尾羽的换羽从中央到外侧,这些特征又与鹑族Perdicini各属相同,形态特征上角雉属被划为鹑族。

物种特征:描述：体大（61厘米）而尾短。雄鸟浓棕色，上体具皮黄色大点斑，下体草黄。头黑，前领及颈侧斑块猩红；眼后具金色条纹，脸颊裸皮、喉垂及肉质角橘黄，喉垂膨胀时呈艳丽的蓝色和红色。雌鸟小，下体杂灰色，带白色矛状细纹，外缘黑。 虹膜－褐色；嘴－灰色；脚－粉红。 叫声：繁殖初期雄雌鸟均发出有规律的刺耳叫声ga-ra, ga-ra 或ga-ga-ga。繁殖鸟发出wear-wear-ar-ga-ga-ga的叫声。炫耀时的雄鸟发出较柔和的chi…chi声。 分布范围：中国东南部特有种。 分布状况：全球性近危（Collar et al., 1994）。罕见于海拔800～1400米的亚热带常绿丘陵山地。指名亚种分布在福建（武夷山）、江西南部、浙江西部及南部（乌岩岭）及广东北部（八宝山）；guangxiensis于广西东北部（恭城）及湖南南部。 习性：具本属特性
