体长约1200毫米。身体几乎纯白色。肩羽、翼上大覆羽、初级覆羽及飞羽均呈光灰黑色，大部分飞羽外羽呈银灰色。眼乳白色;外轮黑色;嘴黑色，下嘴腹面红色;眼周及颊部裸区红色;脚和腿红色。
栖息于开阔的沼泽和潮湿草地。步行时举步缓慢，休息时常以一足站立。飞行慢。主要觅食鱼类、蛙类、蜥蜴和昆虫，有时也食野鼠。6月开始繁殖，营巢于树上。每窝产3-5枚白色卵。
为珍禽，可供观赏。列为我国I级保护动物，严禁捕猎。
