黄牛石自然保护区地处粤北九连山脉，连平县北部，总面积4334公顷，北与江西省九连山国家级自然保护区相连接。保护区属中低山山地，四周山峰连绵，山体雄奇，最高峰黄牛石海拔1430米，是粤东北最高峰，山体自北向南渐次减低，起伏跌宕，区内溪流众多，飞珠溅玉，云蒸霞蔚。保护区地质构造较古老，属中生代燕山期花岗岩，伴生有金属矿床。区内森林茂密，属天然次生阔叶林，珍贵森林植物和野生动物种类很多，迄今发现的国家一级重点保护植物1种，二级12种，一级重点保护野生动物4种，二级10种，是植物宝库，动物乐园。 保护区属中亚热带季风气候，山顶云遮雾绕，山间林涛阵阵，空气清新，负离子含量高，是一块资源极为丰富且具有无限开发潜力?quot;世外桃源"，是人们探险、旅游的理想去处.
