饲料作物以获得饲料为主要栽培目的，其整个植株或茎、叶、籽实可作家畜家禽饲料的作物。粮食作物中的玉米、薯类，既是人的粮食，又是高质量饲料;大豆及其他豆类，是人的主要副食，又是高蛋白质饲料。饲料作物按类别可分为:①谷物类词料作物。主要包括作为饲料栽培的玉米、高梁、大麦、燕麦、甘薯、甜菜等，收获籽实为畜禽提供饲料粮，也可以同时收获籽实、茎、叶作饲料。②豆科饲料作物。主要有首偕、草木挥、紫云英、茹子、三叶草等。③禾本科饲料作物。主要有燕麦草、苏丹草、黑麦草、籽粒览等。④水生饲料作物。主要有水花生、水葫芦、水浮莲、凤尾莲、绿萍等。饲料作物的生物产量指作物在生长发育过程中积累的干物质(植物体除去水分后留下的固体物质)的总量。玉米、小麦等禾谷类作物通常以秸秆和籽实的干物质产量计算;甘薯、马铃薯等则以块根、茎、叶的干物质产量计算。在组成物的全部干物质户，有机物质(包括粗蛋白质、粗脂肪、粗纤维等)一般占90%一95%，矿物质占5%一10%。生物产量体现作物的总体生产力。
