杉木河在贵州省黔东南自治州施秉县的崇山峻岭中，流淌了亿万斯年，却一直名不见经传。若论流量，这条河常年充其量不过4.2立方米／秒，与大江大河的大开大阖、波澜壮阔简直无法相比。然而小有小的特色，清清浅浅的杉木河在44公里流程内有着总计640米的天然落差，这岂不是漂流的理想场所？此项一开，引得游客趋之若鹜，一时间倒是知杉木河者多，知施秉县的少了。
杉木河两岸，山岩形状多样。在杉木河峡谷中漂流的人们便来了拟物象形的兴致，每每见到凌空而架、造型独特的一个天然石拱，学生物学的叫它“尺蠖洞”，好老庄的叫它“迎仙洞”，搞地质研究的叫它“天生桥”；见到崖畔上陡大的石柱，有航海经历的称其为“林海灯塔”，学历史的称其为“烽台”。总之，每一景致都引来千般说道，乐山乐水，见仁见智，真个是莫衷一是。
杉木河床为卵石细沙铺地，流水晶洼碧透，顺着宽绰的河道款款流淌。沿途云飘山际，鹭宿沙洲，鱼翔浅底，蝉鸣林梢，奇草溢芳，整个环境幽而不险，郁而不闭。倘若有七八十岁的老翁老妪乘上橡皮舟，只要有船工撑篙定可安然漂流而下；而逞能的姑娘在过滩时如被飞溅的浪花吓得掉入水中，即刻就会有健壮的手臂向她挥来——当然这并不排除同舟的小伙子恶作剧，创造“英雄救美”机会的可能。其实遇到此种情形即使落下河喝上几口水也井非坏事，当自己挣扎着站稳脚跟就会发现河水正泠泠地从大腿间流过，瞧那水要多清有多清要多纯净有多纯净，绝无任何污染。何况还会从虚惊中多了一分体验一分得意，难怪一位游客要戏称“不到浪中翻个滚，哪知杉水是甜泉”。谁要有兴趣就停船登岸，到山中采来竹笋，下水中捕捉鱼虾螃蟹，搭起帐篷点燃篝火，入夜后伴以流水蛙鸣，举杯同邀倩风明月，享大自然宽厚、质朴、醇美的恩赐。这对于饱受城市喧嚣和环境污染之苦的人来说，简直是一方胜境。
