在菲律宾保和岛人中流传着一个传说，说该岛中央一座圆形的小山是一个名叫阿罗哥的巨人流的眼泪变成的。当他所爱的一个叫做阿洛亚的普通女子不能接受他的爱时，他一病不起而死去 。
当地还有一个传说，说两个人发怒的巨人打架，互相抛石头。直到他们打得精疲力竭，化敌为友而一起离开该岛。
但这些仅仅是故事而已。令人奇怪的是，人们无法准确地知晓这些聚集在一个地方的山丘是如何形成了。它们都由石灰岩组成，可能只是数百万年雨水侵蚀的结果。它们显得非同寻常，因为这里没有一般石灰岩地区所常见的溶洞系统或地下通道。
这些山丘共计1268座，像田野上的干草堆一般紧挨在一起。有些有圆顶，其他的呈锥形。它们上面覆盖着乱草，在雨季时色彩呈彩绿。在2-5月份的旱季里，炎热的太阳将这些草晒干，变成巧克力般的褐色。山丘的名字便是这个得来的。
