性质: 革兰氏染色阴性。呈直杆、卵圆到短杆状,少数能形成长杆状,大小一般为(0.5~1)μm×(1.5×4)μm;以极生鞭毛运动,鞭毛为单毛到丛毛;不产生鞘或突起物,无芽孢;在肉汁蛋白胨培养基上菌落大多呈圆形、凸状、全缘、半透明、闪光;生长24h内直径约为1~3mm;异养菌,不发酵葡萄糖和烷基胺、不氧化乙醇为乙酸;能利用多种有机化合物,作为惟一的或主要的碳源而生长;能液化明胶,分解蛋白质,少数需要氨基氮,大多数可利用无机氮;除了能利用反硝化作用为厌氧呼吸的一些种外,都是严格好氧;无光合作用、接触酶阳性、氧化酶阳性;大多数种能产生水溶性色素;生长温度为4~43℃;DNA的G+C含量为58%~70%(摩尔)。这属菌可在土壤、动植物表体、海水及淡水中找到。呼吸代谢,永不发酵。不固定氮素。能利用一碳化合物以外的碳化合物作为惟一的碳源。严格好氧,一些能利用反硝化作用作为厌氧呼吸的种除外。他们的活性在有机物质矿化方面具有重要的意义。
