体大小如山羊，但无胡须。体长110-130厘米，肩高70百米左右，体重40-50千克。雌雄均具黑色短直的角，长15-20厘米。四肢短而匀称，蹄狭窄而强健。毛色随地区而有差异，一般为灰棕褐色，背部有褐色背纹，喉部有一块白斑。
生活于山地森林中，单独或成小群生活。多在早晨和黄昏活动，极善于在悬崖峭壁上跳跃、攀登，视觉和听觉也很敏锐。以各种青草和灌木的嫩枝叶、果实等为食。秋末冬初发情交配。孕期6个月左右，每胎1仔，有时产2仔。
