绿色闪光结晶体。是一种合成的三芳基甲烷工业染料为深绿色结晶状固体，因外观颜色呈孔雀石绿而得名。溶于水和乙醇呈蓝绿色。在浓硫酸中呈黄色，稀释后呈暗橙色。其水溶液加氢氧化钠呈带绿光的白色沉淀。
生产方法 采用缩合法，将N，N-二甲基苯胺在硫酸、尿素存在下与苯甲醛缩合，加入次氯酸钠氧化，再用草酸酸溶，最后经结晶、干燥、混合而得。
应用 一般碱性染机主要用于晴纶、棉、麻、蚕丝及其织物的染色。另外，也用于制造色淀及用作竹、木、革制品的着色剂。
1936年以来，许多国家的水产养殖业曾经采用孔雀石绿杀虫，也用来杀灭鱼体外的寄生虫和鱼卵中的霉菌。非洲一些国家还用其控制细菌、绦虫、线虫和吸虫等。在纺织工业中，孔雀石绿被广泛用做丝绸、羊毛、皮革和纸张的染料。
用孔雀石绿养鱼不安全
从代谢方面讲，孔雀石绿进入人类或动物机体后，可以通过生物转化，还原代谢成脂溶性的无色孔雀石绿。这种物质有致突变、致畸和致癌的危险，并能在鱼体内长时间残留。
就其毒性而言，孔雀石绿和无色孔雀石绿的致基因突变试验结果均为阳性。给予大鼠和小鼠孔雀石绿28天，其肝脏即可检出DNA加合物，并可诱发仓鼠卵巢细胞染色体损伤。美国国家毒理学研究中心研究发现，给予小鼠无色孔雀石绿104周，其肝脏肿瘤明显增加。试验还发现，孔雀石绿还能引起动物肝、肾、心脏、脾、肺、眼睛、皮肤等脏器和组织中毒。孔雀石绿对妊娠兔子有致畸作用。因此——
加拿大于1992年就禁止其作为渔场杀菌剂。
加拿大和美国均规定在食用水产品中禁止检出孔雀石绿和无色孔雀石绿。
欧盟于2002年6月也颁布法令禁止在渔场中使用孔雀石绿。
我国于2002年5月将孔雀石绿列入《食品动物禁用的兽药及其化合物清单》。
孔雀石绿已有替代品
近来国际上发展了一些比较安全的孔雀石绿替代品作为渔场杀虫和杀菌剂，如溴硝丙二醇、二氧化氯、氢过氧化物等。其杀虫、杀菌效果可与孔雀石绿相媲美，但相对安全。我们建议养殖业从业者自觉使用较为安全的渔场杀虫和杀菌剂，以免消费者因为吃了含有孔雀石绿的鱼而损害健康。同时，有关部门应加大监管力度，以保证食品安全。
