形态特征孢子堆生于粟、谷的小穗子房中，外面包着一层由子房壁所形成的灰色薄膜，外面由颖片包围，老熟后薄膜破裂散出黑褐色的粉末即冬孢子。冬孢子淡黄褐色至橄榄褐色，球形、卵圆形、椭圆形，表面平滑，8.5-12μm×7.9-9μm。

生态习性寄生于禾本科植物粟、谷或狗尾草等花序的小穗上。

经济用途此菌能利小肠，除烦懑。可以治肠胃不舒、消化不良，胸中烦懑。将粟穗上黑色孢子堆(黑粉)搜集起来晒干，备用。药用时取3克孢子粉，加适量蜂蜜拌匀，水冲服，日服二次。
