   谱线仅取决于原子辐射本身性质所引起的宽度。又称固有宽度。按照经典理论,原子因辐射而受到辐射阻尼作用,作阻尼振动,辐射的电磁波是具有有限长度的阻尼波,其傅里叶频谱具有一定的宽度,为1.2×10-4埃(!!!P0622_1),与谱线的波长无关。按照量子力学,原子的每个能级具有一定的平均寿命τ和能级宽度Γ,两者遵从不确定关系τΓh。平均寿命越长,则能级宽度越小。能级之间跃迁时,发射的谱线具有一定的宽度,由上下能级宽度之和确定。不同的能级具有不同的平均寿命和不同的能级宽度,因而不同能级间跃迁发射的谱线具有不同的自然宽度。通常能级寿命为10-8~10-9秒量级,谱线自然宽度的数量大致为10-4~10-3!!!P0622_2
