古荥汉代冶铁遗址位于河南郑州西北汉代荥阳城西墙外。从出土铁器上的铁官标志推定，属河南郡所辖的第一号制铁作坊，使用年代约自西汉中晚期至东汉。遗址中出土梯形铁板几十千克,大多散存在炉渣堆积中,板长19厘米，宽7～10厘米，厚0.4厘米，有明显的铸造披缝。经鉴定的铁板为含碳0.1～0.2％的低碳钢。河南巩县铁生沟、南阳瓦房庄等冶铸遗址都有这种铁板原料出土。将生铁铸成板材后脱碳成钢，是为了提供锻造用的坯料，可以再加热锻制成各种器物。因此，它不同于白口生铁铸件在退火成为可锻铸铁时，尺寸较薄部分未生成石墨而脱碳，以致局部偶然存在钢质的工艺。铸铁脱碳钢这一新的工艺扩大了生铁使用的范围，增加了优质钢材的来源。
