| 高清晰度电视 high definition television 在观看距离为屏幕高度3倍时，显像效果实际上等于或接近由视力正常的观众观看原始景物时取得印象的电视系统。简称 HDTV 。20世纪70年代初日本开始研究HDTV系统 ，1984年研制出采用多重五奈奎斯特取样编码(MVSE)传输方式的HDTV系统。欧洲共同体于1985年开始研制HDTV系统，开发出采用高清晰度多工复合模拟分量编码（ HD-MAC )传输方式的HDTV系统。以上两系统均使用模拟／数字混合技术。继日本 、欧洲之后，美国提出了全数字HDTV概念，并开发出实验样机系统。与普通电视相比较，HDTV在垂直和水平方向的空间分解力各提高1倍，提供的信息量增加5倍，屏幕宽高比为16∶9。HDTV是通过提高扫描行数、增加像素点和加宽加大屏幕尺寸等方式来提高显像质量的。HDTV系统采用3～5路立体声伴音，音质接近激光唱片的效果。HDTV是继黑白和彩色电视之后的第三代电视系统。它还可应用于通信、计算机等信息系统中。全数字HDTV是发展方向。
