「数学24游戏」流行於世界各地，成为一班朋友聚会时的娱乐。因为它的玩法简单，即使只得一人也可以自我娱乐一番，在交通挤塞时，单看车牌也可以作为解闷的方法。而这个普遍性当然也为推动数学发挥一定的效用。
「数学24游戏」据说是由华人孙士杰先生发明，他在1986年开始构思，而在1988年正式面世於美国，并且迅速风行全美。但早在1979年1月由毛之价、徐方瞿先生整理定稿，由少年儿童出版社出版的《有趣的数学》中的「看谁算得快」也是谈论这类24游戏，其基本原理、构思等，都和孙士杰先生所发明的一样，而且除了四则运算以外，还可使用乘方、开方甚至对数等运\算方法的。
现在的「数学24游戏」玩法很简单，由1至10之间的整数中，任意选4个数字（可以重覆），再利用加、减、乘、除四则运算，计算出所指定的答案「24」，因此同一组数字可以有不同的方法（算式）作计算。一般来说，可以利用扑克牌或uno牌作为抽选数字的工具，当然也可以自制数字卡，那便可以更有特色。
「数学24游戏」的比赛方法可以有很多，可以作人对赛比试计算速度，也可以比试谁的方法较多，可以填空题形式填上数字或符号等，更可以自创比赛形式以增加难度及趣味性。
