教师提供适于学生进行再发现活动的教材，使学生通过自己探索、尝试过程来发现知识并培养提出问题和探索发现能力的方法。这种教学方法有利于激发学生学习的兴趣，获得长久保持而又便于迁移的知识，培养独立研究创造的能力。这种方法的焦点集中于学生的学习；"发现"只不过是学习方法的一种，而不宜作为唯一的方法。在教育心理学上一般称为"发现学习"。（见发现学习）。
