同移动电话的工作原理相同，跳码汽车防盗器的遥控器的发射机与防盗主机系统之间除了要有相同的发射和接收频率之外，还要有密码才能相互识别。 防盗器的密码是一组由不同方式组合的数据，是防盗器的一把钥匙。它一方面记载着防盗器的身份资料（身份码），区别各个防盗器的不同；另一方面，它又内含着防盗的功能指令资料（资料码或指令码），负责开启或关闭防盗器，控制完成防盗器的一切功能。有了这组密码，也就掌握了开启防盗器的钥匙。
根据密码发射方式的不同，遥控式汽车防盗器主要分为定码防盗器和跳码防盗器两种类型。早期防盗多采用定码方式，但由于其自身缺点，现已逐渐被先进的跳码防盗器所取代。
