首先，应当考虑使用环境和要达到的净化效果。如果是装修两年内的新居、办公室祛除装修带来的甲醛、苯等化学污染，则需选购具光触媒及活性炭催化技术的设备，如：AAF HAC200光触媒型、AAF雅风400型祛除甲醛等污染效果达到98.5%以上；如果是室内烟尘污染严重，可选择除烟尘效果较佳的产品，带催化活性炭和HEAP高密度过滤材料的产品都是最先进的空气过滤技术，如AAF HAC400型和AAF雅风400型除尘效果达99.99%；如果是普通室内杀菌、除异味、除尘，则选择具有初效纤维过滤网及催化活性炭的产品就够用了，如AAF HAC200基本型净化率达到95%以上。
其次，应当考虑空气净化器的净化能力。如果房间较大，应选择单位时间净化风量大的空气净化器，一般来说体积较大的净化器能力更强。例如：15平方米的房间应选择120立方米/小时的空气净化器，选购时可参考样本或说明书的介绍来选择。
2003年4月1日国家出台的《中华人民共和国空气净化器的国家标准》（GB/T18801－2002），对空气净化器的电器安全和净化指标均作了明确的规定。其中，“额定风量”、“净化效率”、“净化寿命”这三个相互关联的指标是衡量空气净化器的总体效果的关键。
应当提醒消费者，由于不同公司生产的空气净化器在技术水平、产品质量和售后服务等方面会有一定差距，建议消费者在购买空气净化器时应选择信誉好、技术水平高、具有权威部门测试认证、产品有保证和售后服务完善公司生产的产品。
