The Qing work, Sheng Dashi s Jingni Ji, is the most systematic historical source treating the Jiaqing 18 Tianli Sect s anti-Qing uprising, and it has important historical value.
清人盛大士撰著的《靖逆记》一书,是记述嘉庆十八年天理教反清事件最为系统的史籍,具有重要史料价值;可是,由于原刻本流传稀少,关于此书的版本源流,学术界一直不甚清楚。

天理教

    中国清代白莲教支派。又称天理会。嘉庆年间由京畿、直隶、山东、河南等地的八卦教(九宫教)、荣华会、白阳教、红阳教、青阳教等教派的部分教徒逐步联合统一而成。主要首领为河南滑县人李文成、冯克善和京畿大兴县人林清等。教内以八卦为分支名目,各有掌卦教首,而震卦为七卦之首,兼理九宫,统管八卦。主要经卷为《三佛应劫统观通书》等。传习“真空家乡,无生老母”八字真言。崇拜太阳,信奉“三极”说,即认为世界的发生发展经历过去、现在、未来3个时期,“过去”称无极,“现在”称太极,“未来”称皇极  ;倡言“红阳劫尽,白阳当兴”,该由“十八子明道”、“孝姓应世”。天理教冲破了八卦教世袭传教家族敛钱自富的传统,提出了入教者缴纳根基钱(或称“种福钱”),起事之后给与地亩官职的主张,具有发动武装起义,推翻清王朝统治的政治目的。嘉庆十八年(1813),天理教曾组织发动京师、河南、山东等地教徒起义,京师的一支并曾攻入紫禁城。后在清军镇压下先后失败。
