美国图书馆协会(ALA) 出版的单卷本专业性百科全书。初版于1980年,1986年出版第2版。主编R.韦奇沃思曾任美国图书馆协会执行主席和哥伦比亚大学图书馆学研究院院长。该书原为配合 1976年开始出版的《ALA年鉴》而编，旨在为图书馆专业的学生和工作人员以及对此感兴趣的读者提供基本资料。全书包括世界图书馆史和图书馆事业，各类型图书馆服务的基本程序和服务方式，图书馆学理论与工作实践，图书馆学教育与图书馆学研究，图书馆和情报领域的国际性组织、机构和学术团体，已故和在世的知名图书馆和情报界人物以及图书馆应用的新技术等。内容侧重于美国和加拿大。初版有406个条目,第 2版有470个条目,增收了"版权"、"情报技术"、"联机情报服务"、"图书馆建筑与设备"等条目，篇幅比初版增加了43％。全书附有许多统计数字和黑白图片。撰稿人多为各研究领域的专家,如J.H.谢拉、D.J.福斯克特、F.W.兰开斯特等。正文前有"内容纲要"(分类目录)。按条目字顺编排。每条字数自数十字至二、三万字不等。初版采用将内容主题置于正文左、右空白栏的平行索引 ；第2版改用卷末常规索引, 但质量不高，如缺漏I字头的索引。与35 卷本《图书馆学和情报学百科全书》相比，该书具有信息密集、收录广泛、及时性强、便于查检等优点，但撰写水平不甚一致。
