约翰·鲍尔（1911—1988）美国作家，生于纽约州，科学家之子。早年就读于威斯康辛州卡罗尔学院。兴趣广泛，未从事写作前，曾担任民航公司飞行员、音乐编辑、报纸专栏作家、电台广播员、天文台讲解员及加州大气科学中心的公关主任。他对东方文化及东方武术深深着迷，本人就精于合气道。五十四岁开始从事推理小说创作。初试之作《恶夜追缉令》出版后，即获得推理小说界两项大奖：美国“爱伦坡奖”之“最佳新人作品”及英国犯罪作家协会颁发的“最佳外来作品”。
