美籍德国画家、美术教育家。1880年3月21日生于德国巴伐利亚州的维森堡,1966年2月17日卒于纽约。1904年到巴黎，以立体主义风格画静物、风景和人物。第一次世界大战爆发后回德国，1915年在慕尼黑创办他的第1所美术学校。1930年迁居美国后,在加利福尼亚大学署期美术班授课至1931年。从1934年起在纽约创办霍夫曼美术学校,传播现代派原理,提倡纯抽象创造性表现，培养了一批艺术家。他本人从1940年起开始画抽象画，被认为是抽象表现派的代表。他画的《春》和《大门》，被认为是最早的抽象表现主义作品。
