大规模杀伤性武器（weapons of mass destruction）的缩写
大规模杀伤性武器，指用来大规模屠杀的武器，一般针对的是平民。它包括三类武器：核武器、化学武器、生物武器。1937年德国在西班牙内战中针对非军事目标进行战略轰炸，“大规模杀伤性武器”一词在当时只是指这种轰炸行为。由于核武器的威力要比生物或化学武器都巨大，在冷战时期，“大规模杀伤性武器”指的是核武器。
1991年的联合国安理会第687号决议第一次将核武器、生物武器和化学武器并称为大规模杀伤性武器，并提到了三个相关的国际条约：《核不扩散条约》、《化学武器公约》、《生物武器公约》。大规模杀伤性武器不具备实用性，因为一旦使用就意味着对方也将以类似武器回击，伤害规模之大足以摧毁整个人类文明。
美国就是以伊拉克有大规模杀伤性武器为由发动伊战的，但迄今为止，还没有找到所谓的伊拉克wmd
