在脑干中央区域，纤维纵横交织，其间散布着大量大小不等神经元胞体的神经结构，具有多种生理功能，最主要的有：①影响躯体运动——调节肌张力和运动。②参与睡眠、觉醒和警觉，具有上行激活作用的功能，这一系统称为脑干网状结构上行激动系统。其作用是维持当改变大脑皮质的兴奋状态，维持觉醒，使之处于最适合接受刺激的状态，破坏这一系统可导致昏睡不醒。临床上所用巴比妥类催眠药物的作用可能是由于阻断了上行激动系统的传导而发挥催眠作用的。③调节内脏活动：在脑干网状结构中存在有调节呼吸和心血管活动的重要中枢。④多种感觉冲动传导的整合中枢之一，故可影响感觉信息的中枢传导过程。
