      在重力场中,当密度较大的液体压在密度较小的液体上面时,它们边界上一定波长的小扰动会发展成为不稳定的流动。因为重者在上、轻者在下的系统势能较大,它们要互换地位才能趋于稳定。这是由重力推动的,所以又称重力不稳定性。由此引伸,在加速度场中,如果密度较大的流体占据力势较高的地位,密度较小的流体占据力势较低的地位,那么边界上的不稳定性总是驱使密度较大的流体去占据力势较低的地位,而把密度较小的流体挤到力势较高的地位,这样才能使整个系统的势能减低。在天体物理现象中这类不稳定性是常见的。
