性质: 描述电荷在物体上分布的一种方式。它由四个既不会产生净电荷,也不会产生净偶极矩的电荷排布而成。如二氧化碳分子,其电荷的分布形式是:δ-O=δ+Cδ+=Oδ-,这种电荷分布既无净电荷(非单极子),也没有电偶极矩(非偶极子),但是其电四极矩不为零,因而它是电四极子。实际上,存在2n多极子,n=0是单极子,常称为点电荷;n=1是偶极子,其偶极矩不为零;n=2是四极子;n=3是八极子等。2n极子所产生的电势按1/rn+1的函数关系随距离下降。不同的多极子与电场的不同特性发生作用,电单极子与电势发生作用;电偶极矩与电场强度相互作用;电四极矩与电场强度的梯度相互作用等。
