   为工程建设研究岩石和土的成分、结构、构造和工程地质性质的科学。工程地质学的分支学科。曾称为土质学。位于地壳表层的岩体和土体在工程建设中往往作为建筑基础和建筑材料以及边坡工程和地下洞室的环境。因此研究工程岩土学对保证各类工程建设的合理设计、顺利施工和安全稳定具有重要意义。工程岩土学的研究内容主要是:①测定岩土的工程地质性质,为工程建筑设计提供定量指标。其中主要包括岩土的物理性质和力学性质。②研究岩土的物质成分和结构特点,以及各成分间的物理-化学作用,确定它们对岩土工程地质的影响。③查明岩土的分布规律,预测其在外界干扰下的变化趋势及其危害。④研究测试岩土工程地质性质指标的方法。⑤研究人工改良岩土体工程技术性质的理论和方法。
