电子辞典是指将传统的辞典中的内容转换为数字格式存储的文件，并且将它们保存在存储器中。用户使用时只需要通过键盘输入需要查询的条目，电子辞典通过自身携带的处理器，按照一定的编码查询方式便可以找到相关条目的解释，并在显示屏上显示从而让用户了解。比如输入一个英文单词后便可以找到该单词的中文解释、音标，有的产品还可以进行实际的发声演示。同样的道理，输入一个中文进行查询也能够查到大致的英文单词。
目前的电子辞典产品，除了基本的辞典功能之外，功能性上已经得到了极大的扩充。比如大多数的电子辞典都具有以下一些功能：电话簿或是名片簿的功能，可以存储电脑号码以及其他一些个人的信息；记事本功能，可以在电子辞典中输入一些重要的信息，随时可以查询，必要的话还可以设置提醒功能；资料库功能，一些电子辞典中还内置了许多的资料库，比如唐诗、宋词，或是科学常识等；游戏功能，一些小游戏可以让用户闲暇之余，轻松一下。当然，不同的产品，扩展的功能也是不同的，用户可以在选购中进一步的了解。
