世界上曾有许多种海豹,它们是鳍足目海兽中最大的一个家庭。可是，随着时间的流逝,海豹家族日渐萎缩,现在只剩下19种了。就在20世纪中期以前,在加勒比海地区的诸多岛屿上还生活着一种僧海豹。
加勒比海僧海豹要比普通海豹略大些,体长在2.6～2.8米，平均体重可达400千克。它身上没有普通海豹那样的斑点,为棕灰色或灰褐色,背部中线颜色很深，吻部短宽,额部高而圆突。僧海豹与其他海豹一样,没有外耳,可有很好的听觉能力。它还有一对敏锐的眼睛,不但能看清水里的东西,也能看清空中的物体。
僧海豹的体型比海狮海象更适宜在水中生活,如它的后肢不能曲向前方,这在水中运动十分重要。还有它的身体外表平滑,几乎成了流线型,非常适合在水中快速游泳、潜水。敏锐的视觉和听觉再加上水中的灵巧,使它更容易捕捉到各种鱼类。而一旦到了陆地上,它的动作就显得十分笨拙、滑稽可笑了。善于游泳的四肢只能起支撑作用,只好缓慢的匍匐爬行。陆地上的笨拙也成了它们日后灭绝的原因之一。
在哺乳期间,僧海豹的警惕性很高，一旦发现危险,会立即将小海豹推下水去,然后自己潜水而逃。如有小海豹被擒,大海豹会不顾自己安危,抢夺小海豹。如果是人抢走小海豹,大海豹就会怒气冲天地向人发动攻击。可是，最终它们也没能逃脱人类的手掌。
