    400米以下距离的田径运动项目。比赛项目包括60、100、200、400米跑。有些国家还举行 100、220、440码( 1码=0.9144米)跑的比赛。短跑是田径运动的基础项目,在其他运动项目的训练中也占有重要地位。短跑历史悠久,古希腊奥运会上已有短跑比赛。19世纪,当近代田径运动逐渐形成的初期,短跑已是基本项目。随着蹲踞式起跑和起跑器、钉鞋的出现,短跑的成绩有很大提高。短跑全程技术包括起跑、起跑后的疾跑、途中跑和终点冲刺。短跑全程跑的时间取决于运动员起跑效果、途中跑的速度以及速度耐力等。现代短跑技术的特点是:动作幅度大,频率快,蹬地积极,摆腿高,上下肢协调配合。由于合成塑胶跑道逐渐增多,对跑的动作要求更加严格。
