分布在北美大陆东部北纬25°～35°的大西洋沿岸和墨西哥湾沿岸地带，南美洲的阿根廷、乌拉圭和巴西南部，非洲的东南沿海和澳大利亚的东岸等地区。从纬度位置和海陆位置来看，它们和东亚的亚热带季风气候区是相似的，但由于所处的大陆面积较小，海陆热力差异不像东亚那样突出，因此没有形成季风气候。这里的气候特点近似亚热带季风气候，而不同之处在于冬夏温差较小，降水季节分配比较均匀。
