根据国际贸易惯例从事国际间商品及劳务交换的做法。
对外贸易方式可分以下几种：①从交易方式的角度可分为函电、拍卖、投标、招标、交易所成交、展卖等；②从支付的角度可分为现汇贸易、记帐贸易、易货贸易、信货贸易；③从买卖双方关系的角度，可分为代理、经销、寄售等；④从商品销售渠道的角度，可分为直接出进口、间接出进口、转口、复出口。以外，还有补偿贸易、来料加工贸易和租赁贸易等。
在中国，大部分国际上通常的贸易方式均被采用。50年代,中国的对外贸易对象主要是苏联和东欧国家,双方政府通过贸易和支付协定，以记帐贸易方式进行。60年代以后，对西方国家的贸易有较大的发展，对外贸易方式转为以现汇贸易为主。1979年以来，贸易方式更加灵活多样，来料加工、补偿贸易、租赁贸易等方式也均被相继采用。
