水鹿别名水鹿，属于鹿科。水鹿躯体粗壮，体长140～260厘米，肩高120～140厘米，体重100～200千克。角的主干只一次分叉，全角共三叉。从额至尾沿背脊有一条宽窄不等的深棕色背纹，臀周毛呈锈棕色，颈具深褐色鬃毛，体侧栗棕色，尾毛黑色。
水鹿生活于热带和亚热带林区、草原以及高原地区。常集小群活动，夜行性，白天隐于林间休息，黄昏开始活动，喜欢在水边觅食，也常到水中浸泡，善游泳，所以叫“水鹿”。感觉灵敏，性机警，善奔跑。以草、树叶、嫩枝、果实等为食。繁殖季节不固定，孕期约8个月，每胎1仔，幼仔身上有白斑。产于中南和西南地区。
