千佛山自然保护区位于绵阳市的西面，与茂县接壤，海拔2942米，保护区面积 1. 771 万公顷，1993年公布为省级自然保护区。千佛山是安县和北川的界山， 两县各族人民共同保护和开发。 千佛山原始森林密布，景色十分壮观。区内有熊猫、羚羊、金丝猴等国家一级保护动物和一级保护鸟类，有一级保护树种，名贵的羌活鱼和药材。在山顶有近10万亩的原始杜鹃林，有奇妙的峡谷和洞穴，溪流和瀑布，有佛光、云海、日出、日落等自然景观。
千佛山上还有历史文化和革命文物。唐朝时在山顶建有佛祖庙、庙宇今存。1935年5月，红四方面军长征从茂县入山，与国民党川军邓锡侯部队作战，徐向前，王树声曾在庙内指挥作战，如今山顶红军军部和红军医院遗址尚存。
