中国航天工业部下属的航天科学技术的研究机构，1968年 2月创建于北京。它负责组织航天技术基础研究、应用研究，航天器设计、制造和试验以及航天技术的应用推广工作。首任院长是钱学森，现任院长为孙家栋。中国空间技术研究院是在中国科学院和第七机械工业部的几个研究所和工厂的基础上组建起来的，有直属研究所和工厂11个,到1984年底约有职工1万人。专业范围包括航天器系统、结构、温度控制、姿态控制、轨道控制、航天器电子设备、遥测、遥控和跟踪、航天遥感、航天器返回、计算机技术、航天器试验技术等。各研究所和工厂配备有适应航天产品高可靠、高精度、长寿命特点的研究、制造和试验设备，其中包括精密机械加工设备、复合材料加工设备、仿真试验设备、遥感器制造与测试设备、环境模拟设备、电子产品制造与测试设备、人造卫星系统和分系统的测试设备及地区保障系统等。到80年代已初步形成较为完整的航天技术研究，航天器设计、制造和试验的体系。
