    火成岩的一类。二氧化硅含量低(小于45%),铁、镁质含量高,以不含石英为特征。深灰黑色,比重较大。主要由橄榄石、辉石,以及它们的蚀变产物,如蛇纹石、滑石、 绿泥石等组成。代表性岩石有纯橄榄岩、橄榄岩、辉石岩和金伯利岩、苦橄岩等。自然界以镁质超基性岩居多。它们常与碱性岩、基性岩共生,形成杂岩体。超基性岩常沿深大断裂带分布,受其控制,形成岩带。岩体的规模大小不一,常呈透镜状、脉状或不规则状。与超基性岩有关的矿产有铬、镍、钴、铂族金属、金刚石、石棉等。
