  此后半个世纪内,天文学家们因为测定星系的距离十分困难,就不去测定速度-距离关系,而去推算速度-视星等(lgv-m)的关系。假定宇宙间同类天体的绝对星等M相同,而且绝对星等不是时间的函数(即没有演化效应),那么依据哈勃定律(v=HDL)和绝对星等M与光度距离DL之间的定义关系(m=5lgDL+M+25),就可以求得上述速度-视星等关系。关系式中m的系数0.2反映了哈勃线性律。这一点很重要,否则速度-视星等关系的线性就不能表示速度-距离关系的线性。1975年有人得到663个正常星系、230个射电星系和265个类星体的红移-视星等关系,把这三类天体的m值组合后可得系数为 0.3088。
  
  应该指出,直接来自观测、没有掺进任何假设的是红移-视星等关系。以红移z(或lgz,或lgcz)为纵坐标,视星等m为横坐标,可以绘制红移-视星等图,通常称为哈勃图。根据罗伯逊-沃尔克度规,可以算出红移z和视星等m之间的近似关系:
