科学家在美国地球物理学会的一次会议上说，在液态地核之内的地球中心是固态的，从而首次为地质界长期信奉的一项理论提供了直接的证据。这一研究结果是通过对1996年6月发生在印度尼西亚地下约600公里处的一次大地震的震波进行分析后得出的。科学家长期以来一直在寻找这一从未被证实过的推测性结论的证据。
执笔撰写该研究报告的西北大学地质科学教授埃米莱·奥卡尔说，科学家们知道地球是漂浮在融化态的铁质地核上的岩质外罩已有一段时间了，不过地球物理学家还推测认为，在地球内部更深的地方，由于压力很大，这些铁变成了固体。
在30年代的时候，地震学家发现穿过地心的地震波的速度存在着不连续性，并提出了地球核心存在着某种层状结构的假设。然而问题在于波传播的是液体、而非固体的识别特征。奥卡尔说，固体与液体的区别在于固体能够维持两种不同类型的波的进行，而液体只能维持一种波。以前人们只观察到来自地核的带有液体识别特征的第一类波。但是，奥卡尔和他的法国同事伊夫·坎西利用法国各地的地震检测网对印尼的地震进行了研究，并且首次探测到了地震波中的固体识别特征。奥卡尔称这一发现对材料科学领域的研究具有价值，因为它表明铁在巨大的压力下表现出了独特的特性。
