义云和尚，京都人。幼时出家，二十四岁参于寂圆（中国僧），寂圆于一二二七年随从道元（日本僧）东渡（日本）。道元灭后嗣孤云法，寂于一二九九年。义云接受寂圆的遗嘱，住永平寺十余年，道风极盛。晚年令上足昙希补席。遗偈云：‘毁教谤禅，八十一年；天崩地裂，汲火里泉。’
