Based on field observations,this paper analyses sedimentary processes and deformation history of the strike slip basins developed along the central segment of the Altyn Tagh Fault zone(located between long 88°E and long 92°E) and puts forwards to geological evidences for Late Cenozoic left lateral strike slip offset along the fault zone.

Comprehensive studies, based on the characteristics of deformation, movement and chronology of deformation rocks in the fault zone, suggest that the Lancang River Fault Zone (LRFZ) with left slip has begun its strike slip since 20 Ma.

Based on evidence of Quaternary sediments and active faulting collected between the Kunlun and Tanggula ranges along the Qinghai-Tibet railway and detailed observation of active faults, authors think that left-lateral strike-slip faulting with large component of normal faulting has been the dominant tectonic regime between the Tuotuo river and Kunlun range during Quaternary.
