体长764-860毫米。通体白色。眼光、眼周、须、上喉裸出部分黄色;冠羽和胸部黄色(冬季为纯白色)。嘴似琵琶，故此而得名。
栖息于沼泽、河滩、海岸滩涂等水域地带。以小型水生动物为食，包括鱼、蛙、虾及水生昆虫等。5-8月为繁殖期，每窝产卵2-5枚。
体态优美，可供观赏。数量不多，应加以保护。
