在一块均匀的半导体材料中，用局部的光脉冲照射会产生非平衡载流子，光脉冲停止后，整个非平衡载流子的“包”在电场作用下以漂移速度v=μ|E|向样品一端运动，若已知电场强度|E|及脉冲电荷包漂移的距离x，可计算出迁移率μ=x/(|E|t)，其中t为光脉冲停止时刻与示波器探测到非平衡载流子电荷包的时间隔，这样测得的迁移率为漂移迁移率。漂移迁移率是非平衡载流子的平均漂移速度与电场强度的绝对值之比。
