在浙江省杭州市区西。汉时称“明圣湖”,唐时因在城西,始称“西湖”。面积566平方千米。环湖有南高峰、北高峰、玉皇山等,湖中有孤山和苏堤、白堤,将湖分成五部分。湖光山色,优美如画。有三潭印月、苏堤春晓、平湖秋月、双峰插云、柳浪闻莺、花港观鱼、曲院风荷、断桥残雪、南屏晚钟、雷峰夕照十景,近又增添新十景。为全国重点风景名胜区。
