水龙骨目蹄盖蕨科蹄盖蕨属的1种,广布于世界温带和热带高山区。根状茎短而直立，叶柄基部扩大成纺锤形，向下变尖成喙状；叶片二回羽状，下部几对逐渐缩短，成熟的小羽片狭长圆形，边缘锐裂，顶端钝圆，有小齿牙。孢子囊群近圆形，生分叉侧脉的上侧一脉；囊群盖同形，边缘有睫毛。蹄盖蕨科是蕨类植物三大科之一，有20属500余种，其中最大的属是蹄盖蕨属，有300余种，中国有100余种，是本属的分布中心,主要集中于西南山地。本种在中国分布于湖南、四川、云南、西藏、甘肃、陕西、青海,生于林下,海拔达3900米。印度、欧洲及北美洲也有。
