| 公学 public school 英国为贵族和资产阶级子女设立的独立中等学校。办学目标是培养能升入名牌大学的毕业生，造就未来担任国家事务领导工作的政治活动家。办学经费主要来自捐款和其他进款，不依靠国家和地方政府拨款。源出于中世纪的文法学校。14～15世纪，为特权阶级和富人设立的一批设备较好、教育水准较高的特种类型的文法学校，即被称为公学，以区别于仅招收本地区学生的地方学校。其中以1382年建立的温彻斯特公学为最早。至17世纪初，著名公学有9所：温彻斯特公学、伊顿公学、圣保罗公学、什鲁斯伯里公学、威斯敏斯特公学、拉格比公学、哈罗公学、麦钦泰勒公学、切尔特豪斯公学。学校自成系统，管理权为贵族和教会掌握。主要招收经严格选择性考试的预备学校毕业生，修业5年。19世纪前共有公学20～30所。成立于1869年的校长联合会规定，该会所属成员学校均可称公学。此后许多文法学校和私立中学改为公学。1941年公学董事会协会成立。1944年颁布的教育法案规定，凡属公学董事会协会的成员学校都授予公学称号，并任命一个委员会考虑公学与国家普通教育制度的关系。公学在英国国民教育制度中自成系统，其培养目标是为牛津、剑桥等大学输送新生，因而具有大学预科性质。所有公学都是单一性别的学校。一般男校120人，女校80人。学生在校寄宿。13岁或14岁的学生从预备学校毕业后，再经过考试合格才得入学。课程与文法中学相似，注重人文科学，侧重古典语(拉丁语和希腊语)和外语。多数设有古典语、现代语和数理3科，宗教教育是其教育的重要组成部分。同时，重视培养学生的绅士风度，组织学生参加各种文学团体和研究各种问题的俱乐部以及其他各种社团活动。据统计，英国的高层统治者大多出身于公学。尽管公学制度屡被批评为一种不民主的教育制度，但仍未从根本上改变。
