白话小说
1.发祥期：唐代
当时，市人小说、寺院俗讲成为白话小说的两个发展源头。
2.黄金期：宋、元时期，开封、杭州等瓦舍勾栏处，“说话”艺术盛行，由此产生“话本小说”。这也是最早的白话小说形式，这种小说取材于现实生活中的短篇白话故事，篇幅较短，基本用口语叙述，有虚构性。
3.全盛期：明、清
这一时期，，在白话小说基础上出现了文人模仿此形式创作的拟话本小说，还产生了演义小说、长骗章回体小说等。如明代四大奇书：《水浒传》《三国演义》《西游记》《长篇章回体演义小说》《金瓶梅》（第一部文人独立创作的小说）；明代的拟话本小说“三言”“两拍”；“三言”即冯梦龙的《喻世名言》《警世通言》《醒世恒言》，“二拍”即凌蒙初”的《初刻拍案惊奇》《二刻拍案惊奇》；清代“双峰”：《儒林外史》《红楼梦》。而《红楼梦》更成为中国古代现实主义小说辉煌的顶点。
